The Pelham high school Battle of the Books team went undefeated in this year’s tournament. The team won first place and the tournament’s top scorer was Pelham’s own sophomore Anna C.

Battle of the Books is a tournament put on by the county every year. It is like Scholars Bowl, but the questions are only on six specific books picked by the county. The books included All These Things I’ve Done by, Gabrielle Zevin, Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein, Delirious by Daniel Palmer, Never Fall Down by Patricia McCormick, The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, and The Future of Us by Jay Asher

“My favorite book this year was The Fault in our Starsby John Green. This book has very much opened my eyes and changed by paradigm,” said sophomore Anna C.

The Pelham high School Battle of the Books team is led by Mrs. Burnett. The team has been to the battle of the books tournament for the last 7 years, and has been undefeated for 6 of those tournaments.

“I loved being on the Battle of the Books team. It’s a great experience and I was introduced to great new books and friends,” Said sophomore Kimmi L.

“We have no seniors on our team this year, which is pretty unusual. The students we do have on this team are outstanding though, as you can tell by our first place position,” said Mrs. Burnett on her team.

For generations Auburn fans have gathered at Toomer’s corner to roll the two famous old oak trees that are over 130 years old. The tradition dates back several decades, all the way to the World War I era. Before the tradition of rolling the trees, the square was considered a social meeting place.

The first signs of rolling took place when students would throw telegraph updates at the trees. The first official rolling is hard to determine, but most evidence points to the legendary 1972 Iron Bowl as the first occasion for toilet paper rolling.

The trees themselves have only been rolled for the past 15-20 years.

But because of their poisoned state, Auburn University deemed it appropriate to have one final rolling then cut the historic oak trees down.

The final rolling of Toomer’s corner took place after Auburn’s 2013 A Day game. Over 83 thousand people attended the game. A block party was held after the game for the several thousand fans who wished to roll toilet paper for one last time.

Sophomore Allie F. said, “It seemed like millions of people crowded the square and the trees were hardly visible under the layers and layers of toilet paper!”

It was a bittersweet day for all Auburn fans.

“It was sad to see the trees go because of all the memories I have on Toomer’s corner,” said alumni Patrick W.

Currently the university has plans to re design the Samford Park area and plant new trees in the place of the old ones.

Bill Stone, alumni association president, said “I can tell one thing for certain: Live trees will be planted on the corner and the great tradition of rolling the corner will continue.”

As I look back, as I’m sure many seniors are doing at this point in the year, I feel that it is unbelievable that this class is so close to graduating. Since this is my last editorial (which seems unbelievable enough itself) I want to thank all of those who have influenced the lives of all of the seniors in such a positive way. Pelham has been where we have become who we are, where we have decided what to do with our lives, and where we have made everlasting memories. I think it’s only appropriate that I dedicate this to the people who do not get thanked very often, the faculty and our fellow classmates.

As much as students in general tend to complain about their teachers, Pelham has, in my opinion, the best teachers and overall faculty of any school. This senior class is very lucky to have learned from some of the most passionate, caring and intelligent teachers we will probably ever have. Regardless of the subject or level, from regular all the way to AP, teachers at Pelham seem to really care about their students and truly want to prepare these students for college. We, as seniors, should really appreciate these teachers while they’re available because the professors that we have next year, who lecture to classes of hundreds, may not be as forgiving, helpful or passionate. I, for one, can say that without these great teachers I never would have realized what I wanted to major in and that I too want to teach others one day. Thank you just does not seem enough to say to these teachers in order to express our collective gratitude.

Another group that needs to be thanked is the student body. This class of seniors has provided me and countless others with best friends, those who have helped us grow (through both encouragement and hardship), and those who are simply unforgettable. We owe our most palpable and vivid memories to our fellow seniors whom we have been with throughout this incredible journey. I know that when we look back on our high school years, it will be this group that we remember most of all.

As we seniors venture out into the reality that lies before us and as the clock to graduation and college winds down, I hope that we can all remember the journey we took together. However it has changed us, it is certain that these years have dictated who we are. Now, as we step into the real world as adults, it is up to us to make sure that the foundation that has been laid by our high school years is built upon by even better memories to come.

The year is finally drawing to an end, and freshmen are finishing their first high school year. Pelham High School used many different techniques to try and inform new students. One of the more successful methods was PHS Live. PHS Live, in my opinion, was helpful most of the time.

“It was easy to find out about what was happening because of PHS Live, but also hard because it was not always easy to hear it,” said freshman, Landon G.

With this said, some new students still missed out on many opportunities. Most of the time if you missed PHS Live, you were out of the loop. Many clubs did use posters as well as some teachers told students in their classrooms about opportunities provided.

“It was easy to find out because my teacher told our class about the club,” said freshman, Jackie M.

Even with the combined efforts of PHS Live, posters, teachers, and Camp Pelham most freshmen were uninformed and not prepared for what to expect at Pelham High School. I have found that many opportunities were missed because of this.

“I wanted to join SGA but couldn’t because I didn’t know when, where, or how to,” said Landon G.

“I feel like they should have done a better job advertising with more than just PHS Live,” said freshman, Meradith R.

Still there are many ways students can find out about things happening in the school if they just take a little extra initiative. Missed announcements can be found on the school web page, counselor’s office, and maybe read the school’s newspaper.

With this said, I believe that the school should have allotted a day for incoming students to learn about clubs, activities, and other school events that new students would not come to school and experience the shock of knowing almost nothing of what is going on at Pelham High School.

Shelby B. was selected for Auburn’s Flag line, while Maddie G. was selected for Auburn’s Dance line. Mallory S. was chosen for UAB’s Majorettes and Rachel K. was chosen for Samford’s Cheerleading squad.

Shelby B. and Maddie G. will be a part of Auburn’s Tiger Eyes, which is similar to the PHS Visual Ensemble. They will perform in the stands at football games sitting with the band and will be performing at pregame and halftime.

“I am so excited to be an Auburn Tiger Eye! It is going to be so much fun and I cannot wait until next school year,” said senior Maddie G.

Senior Mallory S. will be a part of UAB’s majorettes and the Marching Blazers. She will be performing with UAB’s band at home games and travelling to away games that are close by.

“It is going to be so much fun cheering for UAB at all the games! I can’t wait until college football games start,” said senior Mallory S.

Rachel K. will be cheering for Samford’s sports teams at every game next school year. Rachel K. is the only one of the PHS senior cheerleaders cheering at a college next school year.

“I love Samford, and I cannot believe that I will be cheering for the team at every game!” said senior Rachel K.

As seniors prepare for college, the question of living in a dorm or an apartment has become a priority. Different colleges differ in the costs of dorms and apartments.

Two examples are Alabama and Auburn. At Alabama, apartments are, as a whole, cheaper than living in a dorm, but freshman are required to live in a dorm. On the other hand, at Auburn some apartments are cheaper and some are more expensive than living in a dorm, but there are not enough dorms at Auburn to house all freshmen, so the freshmen are not required to live in dorms.

“I am staying in a dorm next year because I don’t want to deal with the hassle of getting on campus every day. It is also a great way to meet new people,” said senior Jessica M.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both dorms and apartments. In the dorms, students usually share a room with either a random roommate or someone they have chosen. There is less room for cooking appliances in a dorm, whereas in an apartment there is generally a full kitchen. There is also usually a living room in an apartment, and it is rare in the dorms.

“I am not living in a dorm next year, and I like the fact that I get more privacy because of having my own room. The dorms have almost no privacy and you can’t really eat at home or anything where as apartments don’t have to worry about it. At Auburn, a good number of the apartments are the same, if not cheaper than the dorms,” said senior Andrew B.

There are also many advantages to living in a dorm. Generally, dorms are on campus at each college whereas apartments are usually off campus and farther away. In dorms, it is easy to make friends with a roommate or the people on the same floor. Being on campus means that students are closer to classes and other needed buildings.

“Statistics show that students who stay in a dorm have a higher GPA than those students who don’t. I like being on campus near the library and other buildings,” said senior Julia T.

As the end of the school year approaches, seniors are gearing their minds towards college and how life after high school will be like. Some will enter the workforce, some will enlist into the military, and others will enroll into college and other higher education. Those who enroll into college will be presented the opportunity to join a fraternity or sorority.

These form a campus’ Greek society. Students who take part of the Greek life on campus gain many social skills like how to get along with others and work as a team. The Greek institutions also provide a family atmosphere that could be very helpful in college. Lifelong friends and memories are made while being a part of this very unique experience.

Library Media Specialist Mrs. Kirk was in Kappa Alpha Theta at the University of Alabama. She lived in the sorority house and was involved with many of the swaps and events with Kappa Alpha Theta. Her advice to seniors who are considering is “Make sure that [the seniors] give all sororities a chance. Going in, I ended up pledging to a different sorority than I originally thought that I was interested in.”

Band instructor Mr. Ward was involved in the fraternity Alpha Tau Omega at the University Of Alabama. He attended recreational sports and band parties and also participated in rush week. His advice is to
“Be yourself. Try to get as many rec letters as you can. Ask about hazing, what is expected of pledges, etc. “

Many are involved with Greek life on campus during their college years. Many of them said they were involved with Rush week at their campus their freshman or sophomore years. Rush week is where sorority and fraternities have socializing events and try and get to know the newcomers to Greek society. Once they get to know the ones of those who want to take part in all of this, they start to recruit. A lot of the teachers at Pelham went through this very experience.

Mr. Ward says “Both of my parents were Greek at UA so I got on to a lot of rush lists, went to different rush parties and went to ATO because it was the best fit for me.”

Mrs. Kirk went through rush week and said “I went through all of the days and then narrowed it down to my top two choices.”

Mrs. Neel was in the Phi Mu chapter at the University of Montevallo. She suggests having summer jobs and scholarships. “They help with sorority dues and other things like formals, pictures, and t-shirts.” She also says to be careful about what you place on social networks, have good grades, community service hours, good social etiquette, and other things to help you get bids. “Remember, you are a benefit to the sorority,” she says,” they are looking for ladies who will make a positive impact in the sorority.”

Mrs. Hunt was a Kappa Delta at the University of South Alabama. She served as a treasurer and other various roles in the sorority. “The great thing about being in a sorority is that there is always someone that shares the same interests as you, and is a great way to make new friends, and make memories that will last a lifetime.” She got into the sorority by participating in the typical Fall Rush activities. Her advice is to look for a group that shares the same belief and attitude as you.

This classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald is taught in many schools. It is known for its symbolism, and it is a story to which many people can relate.

“I am looking forward to seeing this movie because I loved reading The Great Gatsby in class! I can’t wait to see it with my friends,” said junior, Kayla T.

This movie is being produced by Warner Brothers. Leonardo DiCaprio is starring as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire playing Nick Carraway, Joel Edgerton and Carey Mulligan as Tom and Daisy Buchanan, Isla Fisher and Jason Clarke as Myrtle and George Wilson, and finally, Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker.

“I am ready for this movie to come out; I love Leonardo Dicaprio! I can’t wait to see him as Jay Gatsby, who was also my favorite character in the book,” said senior, Haley J.

The movie is keeping the same time period, dialogue, and fashion that the novel was set in. However, this is a timeless story to which people of modern times can relate.

“I can’t decide if I want to read the book before the movie because I will be reading it in English class next year, and I don’t want to ruin it!” said sophomore, Allie F.

Many students cannot decide whether or not to read the book because of their English classes. However, The Great Gatsby is a novel that contains a lot of symbolism. It can be read numerous times and still portray something different!
